“All marriages in this church of Christ of Latter Day Saints should be solemnized in a public meeting, or feast, prepared for this purpose…”

– D&C 101:1, 1835 edition

As the policy stands all couples that live in the USA, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand must wait one year to get sealed if that couple is married civilly first. In other countries this is not the practice.

Other exemptions from this policy are:
-If the couple has to travel long distance to a temple to get sealed.
-If a new member has been baptized and has not reached a year of membership before they are married, that person can go get sealed when the year membership is up.
